Cancer that begins in the ovaries is referred to as ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer generally remains undetected until it has progressed to an advanced stage and spread within the pelvis and abdomen. Ovarian cancer becomes difficult to treat in this advanced stage. It can be treated more easily and successfully if diagnosed at an early stage when the disease is confined to the ovary.
Risk factors of ovarian cancer
The exact causes of ovarian cancer are yet to be ascertained. Generally, cancer begins when a cell develops errors in its DNA. The mutation causes the cells to grow quickly, creating a mass of abnormal cells. These abnormal cells can also replace healthy cells to spread to other parts of the body.
But some factors can contribute to a higher chance of developing the disease. These include:
- Older age- ovarian cancer is more common in women who have reached menopause
- Inherited gene mutations.
- Obesity or being overweight
- A family history of ovarian or breast cancer
- Having children after age 35 or never having a full-term pregnancy
- Estrogen hormone replacement therapy

Symptoms of ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer may not show any symptoms in the early stages. In the advanced-stage it may cause few and nonspecific symptoms like the below:
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Weight loss
- Discomfort in the pelvic area
- Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
- Frequent urination
- Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
- Pain in the pelvic or abdomen area
